Woman avoids scam

COEUR d'ALENE - A Medimont woman avoided falling prey to an identity theft scam last week by following her instincts.
According to a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office report, the woman received a phone call Friday from a man claiming to be a member of the Coeur d'Alene Police Department. The caller then told her a warrant would be issued for her arrest for not reporting to jury duty.
When the caller asked her for personal information, she began to doubt the legitimacy of the call.
"She told him she did not feel comfortable giving him the information over the telephone," the incident report states. "The individual became very upset stating he was a police officer and she needed to get him the information he was asking for."
The woman responded by telling the caller she was going to call the police department to verify what he was saying, which prompted the caller to hang up.
Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Lt. Stu Miller told The Press Tuesday that this is a common form of attempted identity theft, and although warrants can be issued for failing to report to jury duty, detailed personal information isn't typically requested.
"Our reports usually are name, date of birth and address and... We generally don't call people that have warrants, we show up at their door," Miller said.
He added that if a citizen receives a similar call and doesn't feel as though the caller is an actual officer, the individual should call their local law enforcement agency.
