COEUR d'ALENE - The Community Action Partnership food bank in Coeur d'Alene has a new greenhouse thanks to a local Boy Scout.

Chris Adams, who turns 18 on Nov. 16 and is a senior at Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, oversaw the construction of the 10-by-12-foot greenhouse to extend the growing season.

"This project has the potential to greatly benefit our community for years to come," Adams wrote to The Press in an email.

The greenhouse is located in the food bank's community garden, allowing the propagation of seedlings, and will produce more fresh produce for families and individuals seeking assistance.

With this project, Adams has completed the requirements for Eagle Scout. He is a member of Coeur d'Alene Boy Scout Troop 211.

"He'll be able to go back in five or 10 years and see it and share it with others," Chris' father Jay Adams said Wednesday.

"It's amazing to me how many people are using (the food bank)," he said.

He said Chris will take away some valuable "project manager" skills.

Chris - between sport practices and homework - researched greenhouse designs and checked city codes and permit requirements. He solicited donations of materials, and organized a team of three adults and four scouts to prepare the site and construct the greenhouse.
