MATTAWA - The latest news out of Mattawa City Hall, as of Sunday, includes the announcement that there is no date for the civil service commission to announce its findings in John Ingersoll's firing as a police officer.

"We're still working on it," said Diane Hyndman, chair of the hearing panel.

Ingersoll is trying to get his job back with a wrongful firing claim. A hearing was held on the matter at the start of the month.

The city council passed a new property tax ordinance. A public hearing was opened at 5:36 p.m. After a short discussion, the public hearing was closed at 5:40 p.m.

In other news, Police Chief John Turley noted that Officer Stump attended the Police Academy's physical agility test on Oct. 22. Stump was to start at the academy on Nov. 5 and be there a little over five months.

Turley said the city will be reimbursed by CJTC for reserve officers used during Officer Stump's absence. Two of the officers speak Spanish.

Turley announced that Officer Williams attended the A Ride DUI Training. His goal is to become a Drug Recognition Expert.

Turley noted the proposed 2014 police budget includes the purchase of two new police cars.

Public Works Director Gary Crowder announced that the paving of Boundary and Portage Avenues was completed near the end of October.

City Planner Darryl Piercy explained to the city council the areas where recreational marijuana could be sold within in the city limits. Since residential zoning and property within 1,000 feet of parks, schools, and the Catholic daycare are excluded, there remains about 15% of the city available.

A marijuana zoning ordinance for an interim of six months was passed.

The Washington State Liquor Control Board will oversee these business locations.
