Panhandle Symphony Orchestra concert Nov. 21
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years AGO
The Panhandle Symphony Orchestra will present their fall concert on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene.
Director Tim Sandford has chosen a rousing march by Sousa, "El Capitan," to get feet tapping, and the "Unfinished Symphony No. 8" by Schubert for those who desire a more traditional orchestral arrangement. Favorite of the waltzes, the "Blue Danube" by Strauss, and "A Salute to Big Bands" will also be presented by the orchestra.
Larry Strobel, orchestra manager, has assembled a volunteer orchestra comprising some 60 people from throughout North Idaho that includes a wide range of ages from students to 90.
Many have played with local musical groups in the past and some currently continue with those groups. They are, as the symphony orchestra's mission statement reads, a "volunteer community orchestra dedicated to performing good music to the best of its members' ability while having fun and camaraderie in the process." Four of the younger members are from one family and other families have multiple representation in the orchestra.
Major sponsors are the Jeanne Holmberg Memorial Charitable Trust and Don and Sue Sausser. Because of their generosity, concert admission is free but donations are accepted at the door to assist in the rental and other operational costs.
