SANDPOINT - The 2013 Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club Fall Derby kicks off today.
"The kokanee are rebounding and we're getting some big fish," said James Mullen, a derby organizer.
A reminder that kokanee recovery is hardly a fish tale emerged earlier this fall, when Ralph Lotspeich hauled in a trophy rainbow trout that tipped the scales at 27.04 pounds.
The biggest rainbow caught in the spring derby, for instance, didn't even reach 20 pounds.
The derby runs from Nov. 23-27, and from Nov. 29 through Dec. 1.
More than $7,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers in the adult and lake trout standings.
The prizes for the top four finishers in the adult rainbow category will receive $1,600, $1,000, $800 and $600, respectively. The top four finishers in the Mackinaw contest stand to win $850, $550, $350 and $250, respectively.
Cash prizes will also be awarded to the four top placers in the Youth A (9-13 years) and Youth B (0-8 years) categories. Youthful anglers fish for free, although pre-registration is required.
There is also a Fish of the Day contest in the adult division, which awards $150 to the largest rainbow or Mackinaw caught each day. This contest is open only to members of LPOIC.
Ticket outlets are located in Sandpoint (Sandpoint Marine, Alpine Shop), Ponderay (Big R), Hope (Holiday Shores, Hope Marine Services), Bayview (MacDonald's Hudson Bay, Ralph's Coffee House), Garfield Bay (Captn's Table, Odie's Bayside Grocery), Priest River (Priest River Hardware), Oldtown (Pend Oreille Valley Sportsman), Hayden (Mark's Marine), Coeur d'Alene (Black Sheep Sporting Goods, Fins & Feathers), Rathdrum (Rathdrum Drug) and Spokane (White Elephant Sporting Goods).
Weigh stations are located at the Captn's Table, MacDonald's Hudson Bay, Hope Marine and Odie's.
The derby awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Bonner Mall in Ponderay.
