Winifred Amelia (Yandell) Meiwald died of natural causes in Kalispell, at 100 years of age, on Oct. 28, 2013.

She was born Aug. 22, 1913, in Cascade, Mont., to Frederick John and Emily Jane (Hoidge) Yandell. Her parents emigrated from Plymouth, England. Winifred was the second of three children — older sister Hilda and younger brother Ronald.

After graduating from Cascade High School, Winifred attended Intermountain Union College, the predecessor of Rocky Mountain College. She attended two years, majoring in education. She then taught in Stanford, Fairfield Bench, Heart Butte and Babb.

It was there that Winifred met an area rancher, Ernest LeRoy “Roy” Meiwald and his two young sons, Donald and Irvin, at a school dance. The school teacher and rancher were married three months later. They moved to the Havre area to work on ranches. The family moved to Berkeley, Calif., with a new son, Frank, in 1940, to work in the Oakland shipyards building Liberty ships. Another son, Fred, was born there in 1942. The family then moved to Whitefish in 1944, and then to Havre in 1954.

Winifred and Roy were in the livestock business in the Havre area until his passing in 1974.

Winifred was very active in Eastern Star and became Worthy Matron while in Havre. She moved to Great Falls in 1979 to be near her brother and his wife, then to Kalispell due to health problems to be near her son Frank and his wife Audrey. She became very knowledgeable in Montana history and had read most authors’ books about Montana. Winifred was also an excellent seamstress and made many of her granddaughters’ grade school clothes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, both stepsons, and youngest son.

Winifred is survived by one son, Frank, and his wife Audrey, and their daughter, Debra Meiwald Peterson and husband Lon. She is also survived by Fred’s wife, Bonnie Dunstan Meiwald, and their daughter, Susan Skaggs and husband Michael. Other survivors include nieces and nephews, and their families. Friends Sally and Pete deserve special thank yous for time and consideration spent with Winifred.

At her request, there were no services. Cremation has taken place and ashes will be buried at a future date near her parents in Great Falls.
