Donors fill up blood center

COEUR d'ALENE - The Northwest Blood Center in Coeur d'Alene was overwhelmed Tuesday with residents seeking to donate to a 38-year-old Hayden man who was critically injured in a head-on collision Sunday.
Victor DeLeon, who is still listed in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center, sustained a severed artery in his leg after the car he was driving was struck head-on by Ashley Daily, 30, of Spokane.
Daily was driving the wrong way on Interstate 90, police said. Daily was listed in satisfactory condition on Wednesday.
Friends of the DeLeon family asked the public to donate blood, and according to Sandra King of the Northwest Blood Center, that's exactly what they did.
"We had an overwhelming response of donors," King said. "We really appreciate the response."
King said 25 residents donated blood at the Coeur d'Alene center Tuesday. An additional 12 had to leave because of the long wait times. Expecting a similar showing Wednesday, the center brought in a blood drive bus from Spokane to accommodate the large number of donors.
"It's a great way to pay it forward," King said of donating. "Blood needs to be on the shelves when the unexpected happens."
The Northwest Blood Center is holding a number of drives this month and King suggested interested residents go to www.inbcsaves.org to find the dates and locations.
As of Wednesday, no charges had been filed in the accident. Idaho State Police is still investigating.
