Kitchen project two-thirds completed

Construction is moving along on Kalispell Public Schools’ new central kitchen near Kalispell Middle School.

Roy Beekman of Meredith Construction said that kitchen is about two-thirds complete.

“We expect to be pretty much wrapped up by the end of January,” Beekman said. “We’re in pretty good shape.”

The roof is on and doors and windows are being installed.

“On the inside we’re roughing in all the plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling duct work,” Beekman said.

“We’re pretty much waiting for the kitchen equipment to be delivered.”

Measuring roughly 5,000 square feet, the new central kitchen replaces the current aging — and cramped — facility located at Flathead High School.

The approximately $1.2 million kitchen is the final piece of a $3.35 million construction project for the district, which included classroom additions at Peterson and Edgerton Elementary Schools. The elementary additions were completed in August.

Emergency medical services are not designated as essential, unlike firefighters or police, which means Montana isn’t required to fund them. A resolution that started as a Flathead High School student’s class project may change that.
