COEUR d'ALENE - Half of an apartment complex at 15th Street and Mullan Avenue in Coeur d'Alene was evacuated Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in one of the units.
Bobby Gonder, a fire investigator for the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, said the blaze damaged a two-bedroom unit's kitchen. No injuries were reported.
"It appeared to have started somewhere near the stovetop," Gonder said.
The family was home when the fire started around 1:30 p.m. They called 911.
The tenant reported she was cooking.
Gonder said, "Preliminarily, it looks like it was possibly a cooking fire that got out of hand and got up into the attic space."
He said his investigation is ongoing.
The city of Coeur d'Alene sent about 18 firefighters to the scene. Units from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, with four firefighters, and Northern Lakes Fire District, with three or four firefighters, also responded, Gonder said.
In addition to engines, the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department sent a ladder truck.
"We called the second alarm immediately just to have manpower here in case it did get up and start running in the attic space with this wind today," Gonder said.
