The final Whitefish Gallery Nights event of the season takes place tonight.

From May through October, Whitefish’s downtown art galleries host a special event on the first Thursday of the month. Visitors are treated to free admission, live music, refreshments and unique exhibits featuring the best of local and national artists.

Tonight’s event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m.

Following is information about a few of the exhibits on display this month. For a complete list of participating galleries and additional information, visit www.whitefishgallerynights.org.

Two- and three-dimensional pieces by local junior-high and high-school students will be on display at Stumptown Art Studio’s “Dia de los Muertos” exhibit.

Dia de los Muertos — translated “Day of the Dead” — is a multi-day festival in Mexico honoring deceased ancestors, friends and family. The event features trips to cemeteries to spruce up neglected gravesites; lively marketplaces selling breads and skeleton-shaped candies; family altars; and Halloween-like festivities.

Stumptown Art Studio uses the occasion to highlight local student art. Teachers work with students for this annual event, which features a festive, Mexican-style art exhibit that captures the essence and spirit of Dia de los Muertos.

The studio is located at 145 Central Ave. For more information, call 862-5929 or visit www.stumptownartstudio.org.

The Purple Pomegranate features a juried fiber exhibition with the theme of “Shelter.”

Shelter is one of the basic needs of all living creatures. The exhibit explores whether shelter is merely a structure or if it has metaphysical connotations as well.

Fiber artists throughout the United States explored the theme for this show. Twenty pieces were accepted into the exhibit from 13 different artists.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is located at 222 Central Ave. For more information, call 862-7227 or visit purplepomegranate.com.

New works by Mark Baumbach, Alan Satterlee and James Boot will be on display at the Walking Man Frame Shop and Gallery.

Grant Sorlie will provide live music during the gallery nights event; he plays the vibraphone.

The gallery is located at 305 Baker Ave. For more information, visit www.thewalkingmanframeshop.com or call 863-ARTS.
