Beyond extreme

Radical Reels, described by organizers as "the adrenaline filled off-shoot" of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, is coming to Coeur d'Alene.

The showcase of 11 new, high action films will be screened Thursday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road.

With many action films being submitted each year to the Banff Mountain Film Festival, held the first weekend of November, the Banff Centre created the high action Radical Reels film fest, held annually in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The films then go on a road show throughout the United States and Canada.

This year's collection of traveling films includes "Being There," about fun-loving free skiers living in the moment, taking their sport high into the stratosphere.

There is an array of films featuring offbeat sports such as "Endless Roads," about seven female longboarders who connect in Spain to try some crazy downhill action in Mallorca.

From Norway, the mountain bike film "Lacon De Catalonia" will show Andreu Lacondeguy finding out just how much big air was possible on a small piece of land. Viewers will also be taken to Quebec's most notorious rapids to watch Ben Marr shred the waves of that northern province.

The Radical Reels Night People's Choice Award film "Reel Rock 7: La Dura Dura" tells the tale of two rock climbing superstars, Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra, in a gentleman's battle for the first ascent of Catalunya's La Dura Dura, the world's first 5.15c grade climb.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with films starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $14 in advance; $16 at the door, if any seats are available. Tickets can be purchased in Coeur d'Alene at Vertical Earth, 2175 N.
