COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene police arrested a 21-year-old transient around noon Thursday for a stabbing that occurred a day earlier on east Sherman Avenue.
Jayde A. Brown was picked up at a motel just blocks from where the stabbing incident occurred, and he was booked into the Kootenai County jail for attempted homicide, according to a news release from the Coeur d'Alene Police Department.
The 20-year-old stabbing victim, who hasn't been identified yet, staggered into the entryway of Jimmy's Down the Street Restaurant where he collapsed and received help from workers before emergency medical personnel arrived. The incident is believed to have originated inside a room at the Coeur d'Alene Budget Saver Motel.
The victim was stabbed once in the chest, said Coeur d'Alene police Lt. Rob Turner. The Press reported incorrectly Thursday that he had been stabbed multiple times.
The victim, who also is listed as homeless, was in stable condition Thursday.
During the investigation, detectives were able to determine that the two men had previous disputes over stolen property. Turner said the victim didn't know Brown's name, but "he knew of him" and was able to identify his photograph.
Turner said police interviewed the victim after he was stabilized following surgery, and he was able to provide some valuable information. Police also received a valuable tip that helped them make the arrest.
The weapon used in the incident has been recovered, Turner said.
Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh said Thursday an official charging decision will be made today after his office fully reviews the police reports.
