Historic defeat

MOSCOW - Any excitement left over from Idaho's first victory of the season was quickly dashed by Derek Carr and the No. 23 Fresno State Bulldogs in a 61-14 loss in front of an announced crowd of 14,747 at the Kibbie Dome on Saturday.

Carr and his receiving crew were meticulous in their dissection of Idaho's secondary - especially in the first half - in handing the Vandals' their worst home loss in history.

In the game's opening quarter, Carr passed for more than 220 yards and three touchdowns. By halftime, the Heisman Trophy candidate's numbers ballooned to five TDs and 390 yards.

By the time the first quarter was over, Fresno State (5-0) had tied the Kibbie Dome record for most points in a quarter with 28. By halftime, the Bulldogs had broken the record for most points in a half with 47 points.

The previous records were set in Idaho's 52-14 loss to a then No. 4-ranked Boise State in 2010.

"Breakdowns in our defense. Self-inflicted wounds," Vandal junior linebacker Marc Millan gave for the reasons why the Idaho defense struggled mightily to contain Carr and the rest of a Fresno team that extended its winning streak to 10 games over the Vandals.

"Defensively, we really just couldn't do anything against them in the first half," Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. "They just kind of picked us apart at will. First half, they just totally got after us."

Idaho's self-inflicted wounds were not limited to the defense.

The Vandals had opportunities to at least try to keep pace with the Bulldogs in the first half.

But a season-long turnover problem that was absent in last week's victory over Temple returned to quash two first-half drives in the form of a Chad Chalich interception and a Michael LaGrone fumble. The Vandals also turned the ball over on downs when running back James Baker failed to convert a fourth-and-one situation.

All three drives ended inside Fresno's 21-yard line.

"We moved the ball a couple times early in the game and then had turnovers," said Petrino, whose team finished with five turnovers. "You can't do that. We can't do that against anybody. We for sure can't do that against that good of a team."

Carr played the entire third quarter, finishing 37 of 48 passing for 419 yards and the five TDs. He did have one pass intercepted by Jayshawn Jordan.

Fresno racked up 731 yards of total offense - the most against an Idaho defense since Nevada and Colin Kaepernick accumulated 844 yards in a 63-17 win in 2010.

Idaho, meanwhile, finished with 273 yards of total offense. Chalich struggled a week after throwing for 300 yards and rushing for 100.

The redshirt freshman from Coeur d'Alene was sacked six times, including once for a safety, and threw for 100 yards and three interceptions - the first time he's been picked off this season.

Josh McCain replaced Chalich late in the third quarter and led the Vandals to their first score with a 16-yard strike to Dezmon Epps. But the junior quarterback left the game two drives later with an apparent shoulder injury.

Chalich finished the drive by finding Baker for a 15-yard TD pass.

Despite the outcome, the game was not without some drama. Bulldogs head coach Tim DeRuyter was quoted during a halftime interview by Fresno radio station 940 ESPN as threatening to score 100 points on Idaho because he believed Petrino was telling his players to hit Carr late.

"I think he might of heard sometimes from the sidelines someone saying 'hit the quarterback,'" said Petrino, who recruited Carr when he was in high school, and Petrino was an assistant at Illinois. "I don't think we ever touched him. He surely wasn't targeted, I'm not sure he ever got touched."
