Libby falls to Frenchtown; Polson next

The Libby Logger football team (0-1, 1-5) saw Frenchtown (1-1, 2-3) run over, around and through them Friday in a 34-7 loss.
The Loggers allowed 436 rushing yards on 41 Frenchtown carries in their first conference game of the season. Gus Butler led the way for the home Broncs with 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns, one score coming on a 96-yard ramble.
“We came out flat as a pancake,” Head Coach Neil Fuller said. “This came off a challenging week. We played without two of our senior starters.”
Seniors Nic Robertson and D.J. Maefau were held out for disciplinary reasons after homecoming. Fuller said he expects the pair to miss at least one more game. Adding injury to insult for an already undermanned team, senior running back/linebacker Skyler Higareda was knocked out of the game in the second quarter with a minor concussion.
Down 28-0 in the second quarter, the Loggers recorded their only score on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Brown from quarterback Jared Winslow. Winslow finished with 133 passing yards and 90 rushing yards. The do-it-all Winslow punted well, too, averaging 38.4 yards on his five punts.
“I’ve been coaching and teaching since 1985,” Fuller said. “And this year, even though (last week’s game against) Browning was our first win, we were getting better every week. These kids still have a shot at the playoffs and winning the league crown. It’s hard when two seniors make poor decisions that affect the team’s momentum. We were scrambling with our lack of depth anyway to figure out what to do on both sides of the ball.”
The Loggers play next at 7 p.m. Friday at Polson.

Libby's conference leading rusher puts team on his back
Announcing Libby Loggers football games this year is a predictable endeavor. With the passing game aching from the absence of graduated All-State quarterback Jared Winslow, the Loggers are a committed ground team. Reminiscent of the era when offenses were pleased with three yards and a cloud of dust, the Loggers run game repeatedly rams the ball right into the teeth of the opposing defense.
