Lake City downs Sandpoint in battle of area powers

SANDPOINT - Two of the top teams in North Idaho squared off on Tuesday night, with Lake City's power hitting proving the difference in a 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-17 win over Sandpoint at Les Rogers Court.

College bound 6-foot-2 outside hitters Haile Watson (17) and Madi Farrell (14) combined for 31 kills, Kasey Widmeyer added 14 digs and C.C. Cates 39 assists to lead the Timberwolves (18-6).

"It was a great team effort, we played well together as a group," Lake City coach Bret Taylor said. "We had ups and downs at every position, but stayed together and pulled it out."

Cates added 13 digs, Natalie Taylor 11.

Hannah Neumann had 15 kills for Sandpoint (18-10). Mariah Kluver added 15 digs, Hailey Dunn 18 assists and three blocks, Taylor Martin 10 kills and Anna Alsager three blocks.

"Our passing was the best we've had this season," said Sandpoint coach Karen Alsager, who felt Lake City's attack was the difference. "They hit better than we did. We couldn't dig or line up our block."

Sandpoint hosts Lewiston on Saturday in the final of four meetings this season with the 5A state champs.

Post Falls

POST FALLS - Brenna Meehan had six kills and two blocks for the Trojans in a 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 loss to the 5A Inland Empire League champion Bengals at The Arena.

Jamie Brewer had six kills, Suzanne de Tar two blocks, Brooke Sausser seven digs, Amy Booth seven digs and Lydea Schneider nine assists for Post Falls (8-21, 0-4 5A IEL), which travels to Lake City on Thursday.

Lewiston improves to 25-1, 6-0 after having its 34-match win streak snapped in the championship match of the Linda Sheridan Crossover Classic on Saturday in Spokane against Skyview High of Nampa.

Lakeland

RATHDRUM - Kelly Ramus had nine kills for the Hawks in a 25-6, 25-8, 25-18 loss to the Bears in a 4A Inland Empire League match at Hawk Court.

Morgan Landers had five kills, Jennifer Thomas 15 assists for Lakeland (5-11, 0-3 4A IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Moscow improves to 2-1 in league.

Timberlake

SPIRIT LAKE - Andee Wendt had eight kills and three blocks to lead the visiting Wildcats past the Tigers 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 in an Intermountain League match.

Kelsey Carter had eight kills and Marley Chambers had nine digs for Kellogg (9-9, 4-1 IML), which travels to Wallace on Monday.

Matraca Rocheleau had seven assists, four kills and three digs, Tayah Holbert five kills, Courtney Eaton eight assists, Kiara Hauck four digs and Ayla Jelinek six kills for Timberlake (2-21, 0-5), which hosts St. Maries on Thursday.

St. Maries

ST. MARIES - Karly Douglas had 33 assists and two aces for the visiting Spartans in a 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19 nonleague win over the Lumberjacks.

Kelsey Auer had 20 assists, Kari Ghramm and Haylee Waddell nine kills, Maddi McQueen 13 digs and Aubree Hall 11 digs for St. Maries (5-12), which travels to Timberlake on Thursday.

"We had a really good match tonight," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "We were running a 6-2, so all of our hitters had numbers tonight and our defense in the back row with Madi and Aubree played really well. We made a lot of changes midway through the match, and the girls handled it great."

Jill Weimer had 15 kills, Molly French 23 digs for Priest River (7-3).

Kootenai

COEUR d'ALENE - After falling behind by losing the first two games against Kootenai, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy came all the way back to win, 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-10, in nonleague play at Holy Family Catholic School.

"We had a really slow start tonight, but a great finish," Cd'A Charter coach Krista Brand said. "I just wanted them to play, and they were able to come back and win."

Anna Verhaeghe and Katie Petticolas each put away eight kills for the Panthers (6-12). Taylor Garn finished with 19 assists, Libby Goodwin had 10 aces and Tayler Petticolas finished with 12 digs.

Kootenai hitters Lacy Goodsen and Allison Short each had six kills. Hope Martin had five digs for the Warriors (0-13).

Charter plays in a tri-match against Grangeville and Orofino in St. Maries on Saturday.

Clark Fork

PLUMMER - Francine Hendrickx had 45 digs, five aces and four kills to lead the Knights past the Wampus Cats 21-25, 25-27, 25-17, 25-20, 15-6 in a North Star League match.

Avery Brown-Sonder had 14 kills and 25 digs, Cailyn Dohrman 15 blocks and eight kills and Talia Hendrickx 17 digs and two kills for Lakeside (11-7, 6-1 NSL), which hosts Mullan on Tuesday.

"We've played 13 games in two weeks, so we're pretty physically exhausted," Lakeside co-coach Karyn Stockdale said. "But we managed to come back, which was amazing considering how tired the girls are. They've been playing really hard and tough matches the last two weeks and we're really proud of them coming back to win it in five games."

Clark Fork is 6-6, 4-3.

Kootenai Thunder

COCOLALLA - Sydney Lawson had 15 kills and four blocks to lead the Royals past the Kootenai Thunder 25-20, 25-15, 18-25, 20-25, 15-9 in a Mountain Christian League match at Cocolalla Bible Camp.

Breanna Clemans had 15 assists, Liz Bookamer nine aces and Sarah Ployhar 10 digs for North Idaho Christian (10-2, 7-2 MCL), which travels to Pullman Christian on Thursday.
