Marie H. (Todd) Hartman, 94, passed away peacefully Oct. 4, 2013, in Kalispell, surrounded by her family. “She is now in the loving arms of our Lord.” She will be greatly missed, but her loving spirit will always remain with us.
Marie Henrietta Theresa Todd was born May 10, 1919, in Missoula, to parents Harry E. and Mary Theresa (Morris) Todd. The family moved to Kalispell in 1923. She attended St. Matthew’s grade and high school from 1925 to 1937.
From 1937 to 1942, she worked as a bookkeeper for her parents at Todd’s Bakery.
In 1945, she graduated from Columbus School of Nursing in Great Falls as a registered nurse. In June of 1945, she enlisted in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and served until 1946. She was awarded the Victory Medal. After returning home, she worked as a nurse at Kalispell General Hospital from 1946 to 1949.
She met and married the love of her life, E. Glen “Brownie” Hartman on Sept. 10, 1949, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. They raised three children together. She remained his bride for 51 years.
From 1959 to 1980, she worked alongside her husband Brownie at their family business, Skyline Dairy. She then retired to enjoy her home, family and hobbies. Her hobbies included reading, music, sewing and knitting.
Her passion for knitting was apparent. She was an artisan and created many beautiful things that she happily gifted to her family and friends. She was an excellent cook and immaculate housekeeper. She loved to decorate for the holidays and rejoiced in having her family close to her.
She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Matthew’s parish. She served as the treasurer of the Parent Teacher’s Association from 1955 to 1968. She prayed her rosary daily which gave her spiritual comfort and peace, and she was always aware of her guardian angel.
Marie was funny, fun loving and loved to laugh. She was witty and spunky. She was the epitome of politeness; she never failed to say “yes, please” and “thank you” for even the smallest gesture.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mary Todd; her husband, Brownie; son, Timothy; her brother, Jim Todd; and sister, Clarann Todd Brady.
She is survived by her children, son Todd Hartman and wife Sumiko, and daughter Jean Marie Hartman and Jo Ann “Jody” Schweigert; her grandchildren, Glen Hartman, Amy Hartman and Lisa Hartman; her sisters-in-law, Virginia Todd of Kalispell, and Hazel Halsey of Libby; 16 nieces and nephews, along with her many “adopted” daughters.
