SOUZA: Informed and engaged

I am writing to express my support for Mary Souza’s campaign. I have read Ms. Souza’s newsletter for years, and I have found her to be well-informed and very engaged in the public process. She is unfailingly polite and even-handed in her opinions, and she does not let herself be deterred or sidetracked by personal attacks. She is brave and forthright, and she exemplifies the best qualities of public involvement and courage that all citizens should have.

Ms. Souza understands and defends the responsibility of the mayor to conduct meetings and discussions as fairly, inclusively and completely as possible. Her thoughts are always clearly stated, and I think she sees to the heart of many issues. She is willing to listen carefully; and then to politely, reasonably and bravely express her thoughts with conviction. I have never sensed any personal or political ambitions in Mary Souza’s manner, and I accept at face value that she is a good and earnest person who can see a better way ahead for Coeur d’Alene. I believe that she would work long and hard to bring this vision to pass, and that her administration would foster renewed trust and respect between the citizens and the city government.

I think all three candidates are well qualified, and I salute their efforts. However, I think that Mary Souza is the most qualified at this time, and, because of her fair-minded attitude, her efforts to reach out to all sectors of the city, and her lengthy involvement in local civic affairs, she has earned the privilege of representing the people of Coeur d’Alene as mayor.
