Columbia Basin Herald | UPDATED 11 years, 7 months AGO
Robert Norman (Norm) Arvan, age 55 of Spokane, Washington passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at his home.
The memorial service will be held November 2 at 11:00 AM at Soap Lake Community Church in Soap Lake, WA.
Norm was born in Soap Lake, WA on April 21, 1958. He was a Boy Scout and a devoted son, brother, and grandson. He attended Soap Lake high school where he participated in football, basketball and wrestling. Norm liked to say that when he was winning he was "Stormin' Norman" and when he was losing he was "Starvin' Arvan". He graduated in 1977.
Norm worked as a laborer in the Tri-Cities out of International Laborer's Local #348 from 1979 until 2001. He spent most of those years working for Lydig, George A Grant and JA Jacobsen construction companies. Norm was married to Nancy Aubertin from 1979 until 1995. Norm worked in the maintenance department at Kennewick General Hospital for 7 years before moving to Spokane. As a young man Norm enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and fishing, and gardening. He was also actively involved in coaching the URM little league team for Kennewick American Youth Baseball from 1981 until 1988. He was keenly interested in politics and was, like his mother before him, a proud Democrat.
Norm loved pets, among them were cats; Spike and Dash, and dogs; Skippy and Buddy. His favorite movie was It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He was truly witty, and loved to laugh and make those around him laugh by his kind, gentle teasing sense of humor. He was very generous and believed in his principles. What little he had he would gladly share. He had a big heart, which he wore on his sleeve.
Norm had 2 children who survive him, his daughter Anna Arvan (his little "Kato") of Port Angeles, his son Noah Arvan (Monica) and granddaughter Elvis Rose Arvan of Seattle. Although Norm didn't get the chance to meet Elvis Rose, many of his last phone calls were to family members and old friends to announce his granddaughter's birth. Norm was extremely proud of Noah's military service and Anna's music. Also surviving Norm are his brothers, Jim (Kathy) Arvan, John Arvan and his sister Virginia (Michael) Metcalf, close family friend Ron Gillett, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and friends.
Loved ones who preceded Norm in death are; his parents, Norma Arvan (nee Ellickson) and Ted Arvan, as well as his father-in-law, Benny Aubertin.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to YFA Connections, 22 S. Thor St. Spokane, WA. 99202.
