WARDEN - After a shaky start to the season, the Warden Cougars are in the midst of an impressive winning streak.

The Cougars extended their streak to five wins in a row Tuesday after defeating the Wahluke Warriors, 5-1. Warden now sits at second place in the South Central Athletic Conference East division at 4-1 and holds a 6-3 overall record.

"We're at a point where we're kind of turning the corner a little bit in the way we're playing," head coach Don Edson said. "We've put together a pretty good string of games here lately and are playing a little better, a little more consistent and that's really helping things."

Warden got on the board early against the Warriors scoring all five goals in the first half. Midfielder Savanna Edson scored the first goal and added an assist to fellow midfielder BryLee Whitney for the second.

BryLee finished with two goals while fellow midfielders Heidy Gonzalez and Kasey Ozuna contributed two more.

Midfielder Breanna Whitney recorded two assists in the rout.

The Cougars struggled early losing three straight matches after beating Quincy High School 6-0 to start the season. Tough competition and the team adjusting to a new style of defense contributed to the slow start.

"We were working on a little different formation that we were playing," Edson said. "I think to a point was part of our struggles."

Warden will look to add to the streak today at home against Mabton High School. The Cougars beat the Vikings 1-0 on Oct. 7 and will look to duplicate the result. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

"To come out of there with a win, even though it was only 1-0, we were happy with the win," Edson said. "There's little things we need to be better at."
