Excluded from the zeitgeist

Stop asking me about the "Breaking Bad" finale.
Even the most ardent pop culture patrons miss out on certain watercooler events - and with "Breaking Bad," I'm sorry to report that I am way out of the loop.
The series finale aired a couple weeks ago to widespread acclaim, to the extent that the online universe couldn't stop talking about it for days on end.
I get it. "Breaking Bad" is awesome. It just wasn't a high priority for me these past six years.
I tried the show a few years back, and I admired its acting and pacing. Even from the beginning, certain episodes unspooled in such dramatic, surprising ways. I never really got hooked though, and other things just kept stealing my attention.
As a certified movie zealot, I'm more inclined to see the new Dwayne Johnson film before even thinking about watching a universally-adored hour of television.
That's dopey logic, I know. I've seen more James Gandolfini movies than episodes of "The Sopranos," and you wouldn't believe some of the strange, low-budget zombie movies I've watched instead of "The Walking Dead."
With "Breaking Bad," there came a point when I just didn't care about participating in the zeitgeist. I always intended to eventually binge-watch the series on Netflix Instant, and now I'm glad I waited until after the final episode aired. I'm already through a couple of seasons, and it's refreshing to experience something without the noise and influence of everybody on the Internet.
I already know how the series ends. It was honestly easier to talk to some people by just pretending I watched the finale when everybody else did. As with any good television series, there's a difference between plot points and the journey of character experience. It's how you get somewhere that distinguishes good stories from bad.
Autumn is a busy season for movies, so "Breaking Bad" will probably be the only "old" show I have time for this year. Sorry, "Game of Thrones." And, seriously, "The Wire," I promise to find my way back to you eventually. We'll be together someday.
The worst movie of 2013... Now on Netflix!
Remember how I said I'd watch any new movie release before an episode of quality television? Well, "Breaking Bad" had to wait for the sketch comedy anthology, "Movie 43," an abysmal and insulting waste of time, talent and money.
The movie is a series of short, crude sketches featuring the likes of Kate Winslet, Dennis Quaid, Emma Stone, Halle Berry and a whole lot of other actors who should definitely know better. Within the first five minutes, Hugh Jackman appears with a pair of prosthetic testicles hanging from his neck. I warned you.
"Movie 43" is newly available on Netflix Instant Streaming, and you should definitely watch "Breaking Bad," or really, anything else available on Netflix Instant Streaming.
