EPHRATA - Do you have used antifreeze sitting around in your garage and wonder what to do with it?

Grant County Solid Waste offers a free year-around collection of used antifreeze for households at the Ephrata Landfill and the CDSI Transfer Station and Recycling Center.

Residents may bring up to five gallons per week during normal hours of operation. This collection is for antifreeze generated from households only, not from farmers or businesses, GCSW's Joan Melvin said.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The CDSI Transfer Station is open Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Ethylene glycol antifreeze is poisonous to humans and animals if ingested, Melvin said. Animals and small children may want to drink antifreeze because of its sweet smell. It should be stored in closed containers out of their reach.

Antifreeze contaminated with oil or any other substance cannot be recycled at the Ephrata Landfill or the CDSI Transfer Station and must instead be brought to a hazardous waste collection event.

For more information, call Grant County Solid Waste at 754-6082.
