COEUR d’ALENE — Former Sandpoint High standout Ellie Engel had a goal and two assists as the North Idaho College women’s soccer team routed Dakota County Technical College of Rosemount, Minn., 6-1 on Friday at Eisenwinter Field.
Engel’s goal, in the 22nd minute, snapped a 1-1 tie and put NIC (5-6-1) ahead to stay. She ran down a diagonal pass from Lake City High product Alyssa Allen, took a couple touches and beat the keeper to the right side of the goal.
“Ellie Engel played a great game for the team today,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said.
Normally a forward, Engel went to right back when Taylor Hoffman received a mild concussion. Engel’s first assist came while she was playing right back.
“Tiffany Draper and Alyssa Allen also found ways to help team by scoring goals, but also find others who were in a better position to score than themselves,” Hogan said.
NIC travels to Salt Lake City next weekend to play Salt Lake Community College on Friday and the Colorado State club team Saturday. The Cardinals need at least a win and a tie to qualify for the district tournament.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sheady “Sunday” Htoo had two assists for the visiting Blue Knights, ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA, who scored all three goals in the second half at Eisenwinter Field.
“They came forward very quickly; good speed, explosive, quick to pull the trigger,” NIC coach Ken Thompson said. He said a positive for the Cardinals was, “we created quality opportunities. Early in the year, when we played teams of that caliber, we struggled to create opportunities.”
Thompson said the Cardinals had a good chance to take the lead in the first half, and had four real good scoring opportunities in the second half.
NIC (8-5-2) plays at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash., on Wednesday, and at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., on Thursday, to wrap up the regular season.
