No. 1 Bozeman dominated both sides of the ball in a 62-7 win over Flathead in a Class AA football game Friday at Legends Stadium.
Bozeman running back Hunter Gappmayer plowed through the Flathead defense for 202 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries and tight end Will Dissly caught four passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Bozeman’s defense racked up seven sacks and intercepted Flathead quarterback Easton Johnson four times.
“They’re just really disciplined and have good coaching,” Flathead linebacker Caleb McCracken said of Bozeman. “And all of their players are pretty big.”
Flathead (2-5) isn’t the first team to get steamrolled by Bozeman (7-0) this season. Last week the Hawks battered previously unbeaten Helena Capital 65-9 en route to becoming the unanimous No. 1 choice in the Associated Press poll.
“They’re awesome aren’t they?,” Flathead coach Russell McCarvel said. “Give them all the credit. They’ve got a lot of good-looking, Division I-type players and they’re impressive to watch. They’ve got some big, athletic guys and you know they’re going to be right there at the end. I think they’re going to have a chance to win (the state title) for sure.”
Bozeman put the game away early with three touchdowns in the first quarter. An interception by Chris Johnson gave the Hawks the ball on the Flathead 22-yard line and they cashed in four players later when Gappmayer broke a tackle and scampered 12 yards for a touchdown.
The Hawks needed just two plays to drive 70 yards on their next possession. Quarterback Will Weyer, who has verbally committed to play football for the University of Montana, threw a 55-yard bomb to Wyatt David, then a 15-yard touchown to Dissly to put Bozeman ahead 14-0.
McCracken intercepted Weyer at the Flathead 3-yard line to keep the Hawks out of the end zone on their third possession, but a short punt gave Bozeman the ball at the Flathead 29 and Gappmayer found the end zone two players later on a 20-yard run.
A 12-yard touchdown run by Gappmayer, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Weyer to Dissly and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Weyer to John D’Agostino gave Bozeman a 42-0 lead at halftime.
Flathead drove into Bozeman territory twice in the third quarter but an interception by David at the 2-yard line and an interception by Chandler D’Agostino in the end zone ended two promising drives.
The Braves finally found pay dirt mid-way through the fourth quarter when Johnson found Dillon Thomas in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown on fourth-and-15. The score capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive.
Bozeman finished with 516 yards of offense while Flathead was held to 128. Anthony Holm led the Braves with 15 yards on 11 carries and Dallas Grimes picked up 10 yards on two carries. Johnson completed 8 of 27 passes for 82 yards. Weyer completed 12 of 24 passes for 187 yards for Bozeman.
Flathead will look to end a three-game losing streak on Friday when it plays Hellgate (0-7) in Missoula.
