Soccer roundup: Whitefish girls, boys win regular-season finales

WHITEFISH — Northwestern A division champion Whitefish tuned-up for the Class A playoffs Saturday afternoon by crushing Bigfork 10-1 in the regular-season finale for both schools.

Whitefish (10-2 overall; 7-1 league) found the net seven times in the first half.

Haley Nicholson, Julia Houston, Anna Peterson, Katie Blakenship and Piper Greenwood all scored twice for the Bulldogs.

The goals for Blakenship, a freshman, were her first at the varsity level.

Greenwood, the team’s goalie, played forward in the second half to score for the first time this season.

Whitefish will host the No. 3 seed from the Eastern A division next weekend in the opening-round of the playoffs.

“We finished strong,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said.

“Senior day for us, we spread (the scoring) around to everyone on the team. It was a nice way to cap off the regular season.”

MISSOULA — For what seems like the the umpteenth time, Kendall Halliburton delivered the key shot to give Glacier another victory.

This time she scored in the 29th minute for the match’s lone goal. Maddi Paulson had the assist.

Both teams had eight shots on goal. Hellgate had a big edge in corner kicks, 6-0.

The win assures Glacier of hosting an upcoming playoff match.

POLSON — It was a lot of Linnea Madsen early, as the Polson standout scored goals at 17, 19 and 43 minutes to spark the Pirates to a Northwestern A victory over Libby.

Madsen also assisted on another score.

Sarah Howell, Keely Clairmont, Kyrie Bitterman and Camas Renault completed the scoring. Howell had one assist and Bitterman two.

Polson (6-4-1, 4-3-1) opens the Class A playoffs next weekend at unbeaten Billings Central.

WHITEFISH — Nathan Boone, a senior forward, assisted on the first two scores and added a goal in the 74th minute to guide Whitefish to a victory over Bigfork in Northwestern A play.

Whitefish (9-1-2, 7-0-1) scored twice in the final half to pull away.

Both teams advance to the playoffs. Whitefish, the No. 1 seed from the division, will host a match next weekend versus the No. 3 seed from the Eastern division. Bigfork, the No. 3 seed, will travel.

“Excited to win the conference,” Whitefish coach O’Brien Byrd said.

“It certainly puts us in a favorable situation for a playoff run.”

The Whitefish boys are two-time defending state champions.

MISSOULA — Kyle Higgins scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Missoula Hellgate to a Western AA victory over Glacier.

Hellgate scored three times in both halves.

Hellgate dominated in shots on goal with 31 to Glacier’s 10.
