WARDEN - The Warden Cougars soccer team hasn't lost in over two weeks.
Behind a strong match from midfielder Brylee Whitney, the Cougars were able to extend their winning streak to six games Thursday after shutting out the Mabton Vikings 4-0 at home.
The win improves Warden's South Central Athletic Conference East division record to 5-1 and the team now sits in first place after jumping the Connell Eagles. The Cougars' overall record moves to 7-3.
"We still have some pretty big games remaining," head coach Don Edson said. "The top two (in the division) is definitely within reach for us."
Whitney was able to give Warden the lead early scoring in the seventh minute. However, the Cougars sputtered offensively for the rest of the first half and went into intermission leading 1-0.
The second half showed why the team is in the midst of the six-match winning streak.
Warden blitzed Mabton scoring three goals in a five minute span during the second half.
"The girls just relaxed," Edson said. "They started to settle down and work together and play as a team and that's one of the things we've been talking a lot about, just trusting your teammates and playing as a team. When they start doing that they play very, very well."
Forward Jennifer Mendoza scored the team's second goal in the fifty-sixth minute and Whitney followed up with her second goal of the match two minutes later.
Forward Nicole Guerra scored the fourth and final goal for the Cougars in the sixty-first minute off an assist from Whitney.
Warden's next match is a battle of first and second place against Connell on Oct. 15. The Cougars lost the first matchup of the year against the Eagles 1-5 and Edson knows the team will have to play at its highest level to challenge Connell.
"I think for Connell we're just going to have to make something good happen for us there," he said. "We're going to have to put together just a complete game all the way around, offense, defense and the girls are just going to have to put together that game that we haven't had yet this season."
The match is at home and is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
