SPIRIT LAKE - Don Barnett said he stands for "honest change" as a challenger for Spirit Lake mayor.
"There comes a time in every man's life when they feel they can make a difference, and this is the time for me," said Barnett, who has been a Spirit Lake resident for 10 years and has lived in the area for 18.
"I propose to make Spirit Lake a respectable place to live and work for the youngest to the oldest."
Barnett, 79, said he believes he's the best candidate because he is honest and has integrity.
"They are the virtues that separate a great leader from a poor one," he said. "That is why I know that I can make a positive difference in the community."
Barnett served six years as a deputy and was an electrician for 20 years. He also served in the Navy.
Barnett said he believes the unity among civic groups and city departments needs to be improved for the good of the community as a whole.
"This will take a strong leader who is devoted and dedicated to the job full time," he said. "I will focus on bringing back stability and respect to Spirit Lake."
Barnett said that waiting to discipline former city employees with allegations against them has backfired on the city in the form of lawsuits.
"These are major concerns that will affect every taxpayer in our city," Barnett said. "I am definitely the man for this job."
