Fall has arrived - it's time to focus on an injury-free season

As we start adjusting for the change in weather, we also start to adjust our fitness routine in order to stay safe and gear up for the winter season.
With the different surfaces and activities becoming prominent in the fall, it is important to prepare your body for these changes. Here are some suggestions to assist in keeping your body injury-free and healthy for the upcoming seasons.
The first is to be comfortable. You can do this by wearing breathable fabrics, layers that can be removed, and the right shoes for your feet.
The second way is to properly warm up. A good warm-up may consist of a brisk walk or light jog, followed by stretching.
The third is to understand the change in elements as you go from an outdoor workout to an indoor workout. Even if you are regularly active, bodies respond differently to the varying climates and terrains within activities or sports. If you push yourself too hard too soon, it may lead to stress fractures or other injuries.
The fourth precaution is to cross-train. If you incorporate a variety of activities into your routine, then your body will adapt to changes more easily. These activities may include weightlifting, swimming, or biking, instead of simply maintaining one program.
The fifth and final way to stay injury-free is to take time off. It's best to take a break after several days of consistent exercise. This will allow time for your body to rest and for your muscles to heal.
While you may experience minor soreness as you change-up your fitness routine, it's important to remember the steps to insure a pain-free season. Common injuries such as stress fractures and knee tendonitis typically happen when you push yourself too far too soon. If you do encounter an injury that doesn't improve after a few days of rest, you should visit your doctor in order to determine the best course of treatment.
