DALTON GARDENS - R.S. "Ron" Koontz, a more than 45-year resident of Dalton Gardens, is running for another term on the City Council.
He has served four terms on the council and one term as mayor, and said he has a "vested interest in retaining the ideas, plans and rural lifestyle that our citizens enjoy."
With more than 20 years in public service for Dalton Gardens, Koontz hopes to continue completing projects that are important to the city such as a municipal sewer in the commercial district, road improvements, and coordination with other communities in Kootenai County and statewide.
"I have been retired for 10 years, which gives me ample time to devote to my favorite city in Idaho, Dalton Gardens," he said. He's one of three people running for two available seats on the City Council in this election.
Koontz attended classes in manufacturing management at Long Beach State. He is a certified purchasing manager. He also served in the U.S. Army reserves and was trained in its financial operations management.
If re-elected, he intends to work toward the completion of the municipal sewer in the commercial district along Government Way from Hanley to Prairie Avenue.
"I am strongly in favor of and support the city's comprehensive plan and the feedback from its citizens on retaining the rural lifestyle that provides 1-acre minimum lot size," he said. "I will continue to advocate for the residential district in retaining their septic systems, large gardens and livestock."
With his management and financial experience, he vows to continue to be fiscally conservative and ensure that the citizens' taxpayer dollars are well spent, and that there is always sufficient money set aside for emergencies and future long-range projects.
He supports 4-H in the community.
He is active at his church and has served as financial secretary for a number of years.
"I have been associated with the AARP tax-aide program for nine years and assist seniors in preparing their tax returns," he said.
He said he helped prepare more than 5,000 tax returns during the 2013 tax season as part of the overall group.
He is a bowler. He also loves computers and has been a licensed ham-radio operator since 1959.
He has lived in Dalton since 1966, and before that lived in California and Iowa.
He was married to his first wife for 49 years before she passed away.
"I have been married to my lovely wife, Bonita, for the past 17 months," he said. "I have lived on this earth for 78 years."
