McEUEN: Not up to full access
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 3 months AGO
As much as I didn’t want McEuen field to change, I knew we had lost a battle, so I accepted it and went to see the progress of the park. The paper said “You won’t be disappointed.” Sorry but I was and this is why:
I was with my sister, two daughters — one who uses a wheelchair on occasion — and my grandson (stroller). Could I get all the way through the park the way it was set up? No, it was not accessible. It didn’t look like there were very many cutouts for wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, etc. Part of the path was gravel. I know it is not done and I hope that the accessibility is better, but shouldn’t this preview include all?
I also noticed that there is a swing at the playground, looks like a nice sturdy accessible swing, but do we have to carry the person from the concrete to the swing? There isn’t a pathway for a stroller or wheelchair!
And for all the people out there who say that I am being too picky, one day you will be either in the situation where you are either pushing a wheelchair, walker or stroller and say “I can’t believe I can’t get in that store, I have to go all the way around the building, all these racks are too close, they sure do make it difficult to get around.”
In this day and age no one should have to say that!
