The Alberton/St. Regis Timberwolves saw a 58-27 defeat to the Westby/Grenora Mon-Dak Thunder.

According to Head Coach Jake Giffen, the Timberwolves had a strong first half. Going into halftime, the score was 27-28 with Mon-Dak leading. The team saw a series of bad fumbles and snaps during the second half that resulted in the Timberwolves not getting much offensive play.

According to Giffen, the Mon-Dak Thunder are a strong team that spread themselves out well and have good passing formations. He felt the Timberwolves played really well, but the problems they had took away from their performance.

“You gotta play your best ball when you play a team like that, and we didn’t,” said Giffen. “The outcome was the way it was.”

Giffen said the Timberwolves all played really well and noted that Keir Sanzano and Andrew Lommen played “phenomenal games.” During defensive play Sanzano and Lommen were at their strongest and worked well with the rest of the team to make good plays.

Giffen considered the game against Mon-Dak to have been a good test of the team’s standing. He does not believe the score is a good indicator of how well the Timberwolves matched up against the opposition. Giffen feels the team is able to compete with other teams in the area and sees this game as confirmation of that.

Leading up to their next game, the Timberwolves will be working on improving their offense and practicing their defense. If the team eliminates the problems they have been having with snaps and ball control, they should be in a good place for the next game.

“If we take away the mistakes that we made it might still have been a loss, but wouldn’t have been a loss as severe as it was,” said Giffen.

The Timberwolves next game is tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Lincoln, against the Lincoln Lynx.

Giffen is confident about the outcome of the game.

“If we come out and play the way we should, it should be no contest,” said Giffen. “We should handle them really well.”
