Big Bend beats Wenatchee Valley, ends skid

MOSES LAKE - It typically takes a while for freshmen to become acclimated to the pace of college athletics.
And Big Bend Community College freshman outside hitter Shania Bateman found her comfort zone against Wenatchee Valley Community College leading her team to a win in four games (26-24, 25-15, 25-27, 25-21) Wednesday night. The win ended the Vikings' three-match losing streak and improved their record to 4-5 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East region and 9-15 overall.
"I told them as long as we come and take care of our side of the net we should be fine," head coach Allison Baker said. "But mainly just playing with confidence and taking care of what we can control."
Bateman heard her message loud and clear responding with 20 kills and an astounding .432 hit percentage. Bateman's 20 kills almost equaled Wenatchee Valley's total of 22.
"Shania played really well tonight," Baker said. "She swung hard when it mattered instead of playing scared and tipping out of it. She went after it instead of playing scared, it's good to see."
The Vikings trailed by six points early on and five points late before rallying to finish game one on a 9-2 run to take the game 27-25.
Baker was pleased with her team's resilience.
"They're not just going to give up," she said. "It doesn't matter how much you're down by."
Big Bend jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the second game and led by as much as nine points before winning 25-15.
The Knights were able to steal game three 27-25 after a late Viking rally fell short when freshman middle blocker Brooke Bowers' spike sailed out of bounds. Big Bend was able to pull away late in the fourth game and win 25-21 to take the match.
After the four-match homestand, Big Bend travels to Green River Community College for the NWAACC Crossover Oct. 18-19.
Freshman middle blocker Payton Clark recorded 11 kills.
"If we can just play consistent throughout the whole match and minimize our errors serving, hitting, all that... that's kind of our focus," Baker said.
