Local high schools compete to drive to benefit food bank

The Kalispell branch of U.S. Bank is extending an extra challenge to high school students and the community for this year’s crosstown competitions.
Students at Glacier and Flathead high schools have until 5 p.m. Oct. 30 to collect nonperishable food and monetary donations to benefit Flathead Food Bank for a chance to win $200 from U.S. Bank for their school booster club and a commemorative football autographed by the 2013-14 Denver Broncos.
The football was donated by Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler.
The challenge may intensify because Osweiler is a Flathead graduate, U.S. Bank Kalispell branch manager Joel Kempff said.
“Flathead will probably try hard to win the football for their school, but Glacier might try to take it from them,” Kempff said.
The Flathead Food Bank will weigh each school’s donations to determine a winner.
Monetary donations also carry weight, Kempff said. Every $1 donated equals one pound of food.
“We’re challenging each school to see who can get the most food donated,” Kempff said. “We like giving back to the community and this time of year, food banks have more needs.”
Community members who want to make donations can do so at Flathead or Glacier during school hours or from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at U.S. Bank.
“Here at the branch we had both cheer squads decorate for their school,” Kempff said.
The winning school will be announced during the crosstown football game Nov. 1 at Legends Stadium.
