Grace was called home after complications of a stroke and heart failure. She passed peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. Grace was born in Kingston, Idaho July 28, 1926 to Thomas and Irene Hunt. Grace was born at her grandmother Hunt’s home weighing three pounds, and wasn’t expected to live. But her grandmother (Nanny) wrapped her in a wool sock and placed her on the oven door to keep her warm in hopes she would thrive. This attributed to her fighting spirit. Grace grew up on a farm in Kingston with four siblings, Margaret Toomey, BIllie Stanley, Tommy Hunt and Naida Dupree. She always talked of those days on the farm, times that shaped and molded the person she became. Some stories included a pet deer, riding on her fathers logging horses, picking berries with her grandfather, and daily chores helping her mother and sisters. Grace was very young when her father took her to the train to watch the first elk be introduced to the northwest. After graduating from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1945 she married Richard Smith Sr. They were married 60 years before Richard passed away in 2006. Grace brought two beautiful children into this world. Richard D. Smith Jr. (Rick) and Robin of Coeur d’Alene and Gayla and Craig Turner of Priest River.
