COEUR d'ALENE - LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center has received a five-star rating for overall performance.

"It's an objective look at what we're capable of doing," the facility's administrator Paul McVay said.

The rating was given by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

"There's a handful (of five-star centers) in Idaho, and maybe a dozen in Washington," McVay said.

LaCrosse is a long-term skilled nursing care and short-term rehabilitation provider at 210 W. LaCrosse in Coeur d'Alene, with 100 beds and currently more than 80 residents.

The rating is determined based on three categories of service, including unannounced health inspections, staff quality and qualifications, and 18 quality measurements.

McVay said LaCrosse has seen its overall rating climb from 2- and 3-stars.

"It's truly the people (employees), their hands - this is a service business," McVay said. "When you come inside you'll notice we've got five-star staff."

He said LaCrosse has more than 110 employees at the roughly 50,000-square-foot facility.

The facility is owned by Milwaukee-based Extendicare Health Services Inc.

Other North Idaho facilities receiving five-star ratings in overall quality are Kindred Nursing and Rehab, Mountain Valley in Kellogg, and Valley Vista Care Center of St. Maries.
