POST FALLS - Chris "T-bone" McDougall was itching to raise money for his school on Thursday.
The Timberlake Junior High principal satisfied that by scratching as many "Pop Quiz" Idaho Lottery tickets as he could in 10 minutes.
"It's a dang workout," said McDougall, wearing a bandana and shades to sport a bad-boy look.
Representatives from a record 43 area schools participated in the 13th annual Scratch for Schools fundraiser at the Greyhound Park and Event Center.
A total of $8,981 was earned. Borah Elementary won the most at $480, followed by Pinehurst Elementary with $415.
Borah also scratched the most tickets at 244, edging out Twin Lakes Elementary's effort at 243.
Winnings are spent on projects and equipment at the schools' discretion.
Each school scratched as many tickets as they could in 5 minutes. The top seven schools got to scratch another 5 minutes.
"The first round was pretty intense," said Ryan "Bubba" Montang of TLJH. "But we feed off of intensity."
McDougall joked: "If we don't win it all, it's all over for (Montang)."
Tim Rice, representing Ponderosa Elementary, said his arm was "on fire" after the scratch-off.
"You can definitely feel the burn," he said. "It's elk season - so I get exercise - but not like this in the forearm."
Rice called it an "awesome opportunity" to earn money for schools. "It's very generous for the Idaho Lottery to put this on for us," Rice said.
School spirit ran rampant at the event. Some teams dressed up, others chanted and screamed to urge on their teammates or other teams that advanced in the competition.
John Asher, principal of John Brown Elementary, sported a bright yellow hooded sweatshirt with "Cat Scratch Fever" on the back, playing off the school's cougar mascot. He said the funds will be used to develop the school's outdoor classroom.
"The first thing our staff will want to know (today) is how much we made," he said.
Jaime Valenzuela, a counselor at Woodland Middle School, sported shades and a lei.
"It was hard work," she said. "But it was also very exciting because our school needs the money."
While some schools have won was much as $1,600 in previous years, the average payout is around $220 per school, said David Workman, Idaho Lottery spokesman.
The Post Falls edition of Scratch for Schools was the Idaho Lottery's ninth and final stop for the statewide fundraiser. "Pop Quiz" tickets will go on sale to the general public in mid-November.
The game has two $1,000 top-prize awards, but neither surfaced during the school events.
Funds raised from Scratch for Schools is separate from the annual dividend Idaho Lottery gives to the Idaho Department of Education.
"The lottery was created to benefit public schools," Workman said. "The fundraiser is just one additional way we benefit schools. This goes to the individual schools and whatever needs they may have."
Last year schools across Idaho claimed $97,500 in winnings at the scratch events for their schools. Since the program has began, the fundraiser has returned more than $665,000 to public schools.
