LEWISTON - Lake City played particularly well in the first and third games, but it wasn't enough in a 25-22, 25-14, 25-21 loss to defending state champion Lewiston in the championship match of the 5A Region 1 volleyball tournament Thursday night at Booth Hall.

Madi Farrell had seven kills and seven blocks for second-seeded Lake City (21-8). "We're confident we can play at this level," Lake City coach Bret Taylor said. "The one thing is that we have to become more consistent."

Emilee Schlader had 16 kills and 17 digs for top-seeded Lewiston (31-1), which advances to the state 5A tournament and will play next Friday at 8 a.m. against the runner-up from District 3. Madison Lang had seven kills and four blocks.

"We are peaking when you want your team to peak," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "We played very clean ball today. We passed well and ran our offense very well tonight. I'm most pleased with how we play as a team. This is a great group of girls and I believe our team chemistry will help get us to state."

Brenna Meehan had eight kills and two blocks, Lydea Schneider eight assists, Amanda Westlake and Amy Booth six digs and Jamie Brewer two blocks for Post Falls, which finishes 12-25.

RATHDRUM - Connie Stribling, Kelsey Carter and Amber Eixenberger had five kills each to lead the Wildcats past the Badgers 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 in the 3A District 1 tournament second-place game, earning Kellogg a chance to face Buhl on Saturday at McCall-Donnelly in a state play-in match.

Grangeville d.

St. Maries

MOSCOW - St. Maries lost 25-18, 25-17, 25-20, in the 2A District 1-2 girls volleyball tournament.

The defeat ended the Lumberjacks' season at 7-17 overall. St. Maries failed to qualify for state for the first time since 2003, and for only the third time since 1979.

"We had an up-and-down season," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "It was an inexperienced team. They're very good players. We pulled a freshman setter up (Toni Eells) after our starting setter quit (earlier this season). Then Toni suffered a concussion on Monday, so we had to play another setter. But we have a bright future."

Sophomore Cassandra Scott played at setter on Thursday, replacing Eells.

"They're a solid team, they're scrappy," Asbury said of Grangeville. "They went five games against Orofino (earlier Thursday) and lost. I thought they played really well coming off of a loss and having played five games."

Kari Ghramm led St. Maries' attack with 11 kills.

Kelsey Auer had 12 assists and Scott added 11 assists.

Madi McQueen had 10 digs. Kerstin Auer added three aces.

CALDWELL - In its second trip to the state 4A boys soccer tournament in school history, Lakeland advanced to the semifinals for the first time on Thursday, beating Century of Pocatello 3-1 in the first round at Brothers Park.

Junior forward Auston Henry of the Hawks (7-11-2) took a goal kick from goalkeeper Cade Coffey over the top. Henry ran over the final third of the field and scored in the 15th minute from six yards out off his right foot, after a defender came onto Henry's right-hand side.

"Auston had really great composure and kicked it off the goalie's hand," Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said.

This is the first state tournament Craig has reached as a coach. In 2011, Lakeland won the consolation championship with Nick Haynes as coach.

At 1 p.m. PDT today at Brothers Park, Lakeland faces Jerome, the District 4 No. 1 seed.

The winner of today's game plays in the state championship Saturday at 6 p.m. at Middleton High, against the Wood River-Mountain Home winner. The loser of today's game will play at noon on Saturday in the third-place game at Brothers Park, against the Wood River-Mountain Home loser.

"We're pretty excited about it," Craig said of Thursday's win. "It's the second time for the team having gone into state. It's the first time we've ever won to go into the semifinals. We're peaking at the right time and we're hoping to get two more wins."

Fernando Pimentel scored his first goal in the 45th minute for a 2-0 Hawks lead. He received a pass, then shielded the defender from his left side, got two touches, and ripped the ball from the top of the 18-yard line for the goal.

"Century was pretty tough coming into it and it's a good win for Lakeland," Craig said.
