Specter said to haunt school

The old Rathdrum schoolhouse, currently home to Mountain View Alternative High School, is rumored to be haunted. For decades, custodians have complained of unexplained noises in the late hours of the evening. Students know a flickering light or a classroom suddenly gone cold means the poltergeist lurks nearby. Blame falls on an old boiler and an electrical grid dating back to 1937, but virtually every living person who has spent time alone in the building has a frightening tale to tell.

The specter's name is Evelyn. She is presumed to be the ghost of a young student who offered to stay behind, alone, after a school play to tidy the gym and stage. She was never seen again.

It was 1942, early in World War II. Young lovers commonly eloped, and the kids would not be missed for a few days, so a search for the missing school girl was delayed for nearly a week.

The search ultimately led to the dark boiler room in the bowels of the building. The room was in complete disarray. The marks of someone struggling against the inside of the heavy door aroused suspicion and angst, but no remains were found. Evelyn had disappeared.

While no one has seen the ghost, evidence of her presence is an almost daily event. Piano chords sounding from an empty stage, sudden changes in temperature from room to room, and the tinkling and tapping of something lurking in the boiler room remind residents that the building is haunted.
