Commission raising funds to launch student essay contest
COEUR d'ALENE - The Kootenai County Historic Preservation Commission is trying to raise $2,000 to launch its first student essay contest.
The contest will be open to middle and high school students enrolled in public, private and home-school settings throughout Kootenai County, and will be split into high school and middle school categories.
The program seeks essays addressing any topic of historical significance within the boundaries of Kootenai County such as structures, people, groups, events, movements and current or potential archaeological sites.
The program will award $500, $300 and $100 to the first- second- and third-place winners in each category. The prizes will total $1,800 and $200 will be for administrative costs.
The commission wants to have the $2,000 raised before officially launching the contest.

NIREA to meet Monday, welcomes new members
The North Idaho Retired Educators Association resumed its monthly meetings in September. They will meet again Monday, and all retired teachers, administrators and support personnel are welcome to join the group.
"It is a good way to maintain connections with new trends in education, and also have some lobbying influence as part of the Idaho State Retired Educators," states a press announcement.
At the September meeting, legislative chairman Doug Cresswell discussed some current issues at the state and federal levels. Tonia Steele, a representative from Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), provided a program of information about the free services available, on Medicare and available insurance options.
The group will meet Monday at 11 a.m. at the Union Gospel Mission, 196 Haycraft Ave., Coeur d'Alene. UGM will provide lunch and give a tour of the facility. NIREA members are urged to bring donations of clothing or other articles for the UGM thrift store.
