COEUR d'ALENE - With a berth in the state 5A volleyball tournament on the line Saturday, host Lake City stepped up and dominated Coeur d'Alene when it mattered the most.
The No. 2 seed Timberwolves quickly came back from early Viking leads in the first and second games, winning 25-22, 25-18, 25-13.
"These (girls) did it as a team," Lake City coach Bret Taylor said. "They have faith in each other, they did it together. They have faith in where they want to go. They set goals, they are resolute in making it happen. I'm glad we came out on top."
The big victory allowed the Timberwolves (22-8) to advance to Friday's first round of the state 5A tournament at Post Falls High. At 10 a.m., the Timberwolves will face District 5-6 No. 2 seed Madison of Rexburg. The winner of that match plays at 3 p.m. against the winner between Region 1 No. 1 seed Lewiston and District 3 No. 3 seed Vallivue of Caldwell.
The losing teams play each other at 1 p.m. on Friday at Post Falls.
Whenever the Timberwolves needed a big kill, senior middle blocker Haile Watson, an Eastern Washington commit, came through.
In the first game, well after Coeur d'Alene took a 10-7 lead, Watson's kill over senior Viking middle blocker Sydney Williams gave Lake City a crucial 23-22 lead.
Coeur d'Alene again took a 7-5 lead in the second game, but Watson's block on game point won it for the Timberwolves. And in the third game, Watson's kill gave Lake City a 5-4 lead it never relinquished. Watson finished with a team-high 12 kills.
"I knew we had to push through," Watson said. "When it matters the most, that's when you have to bring it all. We had to go hard, because you have nothing to lose."
The loss ended the season for No. 3 seed Coeur d'Alene (20-12), which went 1-3 against Lake City this season. The Vikings were trying to advance to state for the first time since 2008.
"They were the better team," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "It hurts, it's a goal for us every year to get to state. They (Lake City) deserved it. I'm proud of our team."
Williams, a senior, had 13 kills, five digs and two blocks, senior outside hitter Miranda Miller had five digs, and sophomore Megan Ramseyer added five kills and 16 assists.
"I don't think everyone on our team wanted it as much as the seniors did," Miller said.
Lake City's Madi Farrell finished with nine kills, 13 digs, four aces and two blocks. Natalie Taylor had 10 kills, Kaity Widmyer had 14 assists and CC Cates added 13 assists.
