LA JUNTA, Colo. - Sophomore goalkeeper Tanner Jones had 10 saves, but the North Idaho College Cardinals men's soccer team came up short in the Region 9 semifinals, losing 2-0 to the top-seeded Laramie County Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

Laramie County beat NIC on Sept. 8 2-0 in Laramie, Wyo.

"You could really see the progress we'd made throughout the season," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "They got up 2-0 on us quickly a few weeks ago, but we were able to keep right with them. I thought we controlled the match, but they had better chances than us."

NIC finishes 11-6-2. On Friday, the Cardinals won their first match in postseason history against Northwest College of Powell, Wyo.

"I'm proud of our sophomores," Thompson said. "They played tough and trained well for the last two years. Nobody's happy we lost, but they feel they played a big part in building the program and it's good to see them develop that perspective quickly."

First half - 1, LCCC, Dennis Vivar-Diaz (Domey Espinoza), 29:00. Second half - 2, LCCC, Jesse Molina (Wyatt Witty), 56:00.

Shots on goal - NIC 15, LCCC 20.

Saves - NIC, Tanner Jones 10; LCCC, Daniel Ainsworth 4.

EPHRAIM, Utah - Larissa Claassen had 19 kills and 17 digs and Leeta Grap 16 kills and 23 digs for the 16th-ranked Cardinals, which lost a Scenic West Athletic Conference match to the 18th-ranked Badgers 13-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-25, 15-11 on Saturday.

"We played a much better match today and certainly had an opportunity to win the fifth set up 8-4 at the switch, but credit Snow with some good blocking at crucial times," NIC coach Miles Kydd said. "They were just a little bit better at the end than we were. On a positive note, we had outstanding performances at the net from Leeta and Larissa."

Allison Meehan had 48 assists, Russia Robinson 26 digs, LeeNell Hernandez 13 digs and Anyssa Matheson 12 kills for NIC (12-10, 5-4 SWAC), which hosts the Community Colleges of Spokane on Tuesday in a nonconference match before concluding conference play against visiting Southern Idaho on Friday at Christianson Gym.
