A totalled police vehicle, a car overturned in a creek, and injuries marked traffic mayhem Monday morning, thanks to the first treacherous driving conditions of the season.

Icy road conditions caused several accidents and delays on Interstate 90 and U.S. 95, according to police.

"I think some people were caught by surprise by the rain and ice," Post Falls police Capt. Greg McLean said.

A Post Falls police car on Interstate 90 at the Spokane Street bridge was totalled after being struck from behind by a sliding vehicle in the westbound lanes. The officer was out of the patrol vehicle, responding to another crash at 7 a.m. No one was injured.

"The vehicle was coming across the bridge, which can be very slick," McLean said.

McLean said the driver of the vehicle doesn't have insurance.

By 7:20 a.m., the Idaho Transportation Department de-iced the freeway and the majority of the crashes had been cleared.

Slick conditions on U.S. 95 continued to be trouble for traffic.

Seven people were injured, but not transported to a hospital, when a 2000 Ford Excursion overturned and wound up in a creek in the Cocolalla area.

According to Idaho State Police, Sage G. Dixon, 44, Sandpoint, was southbound at milepost 460 at 6:05 a.m. when he attempted to pass another vehicle.

Dixon lost control, going into a broadside slide across the northbound lanes, police say. The vehicle left the roadway, overturned onto its roof and ended up in the creek.

Veronica J. Dixon, 45, Sandpoint, and five children ages 12 to 16 were the passengers. All the occupants were wearing seat belts.

An investigation continues.
