SPOKANE - In its final tuneup before heading into postseason play, the North Idaho College women's soccer team lost 1-0 to the Gonzaga University club team on Sunday.

Jenny Hoefel stole a pass about 30 yards from the goal, took a touch forward and ripped a shot that appeared to knuckle and got through NIC keeper Whittni Mundel's hands in the 24th minute.

"Overall, it was a rather lackluster performance by us as there were a few players I needed to rest before next week's tournament in Cheyenne, Wyo.," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "And I think some of the other players were looking ahead as well and not as focused on today's game."

Mundel saved a penalty kick late in the second half taken by Gonzaga defender Allison Wonn with a dive to her left, getting just enough of the ball to deflect it wide of the post.

NIC (7-7-1) plays Otero Junior College of La Junta, Colo., on Friday at 1 p.m. PDT in the semifinal of the Region IX/District C tournament.

First half - 1, GUC, Jenny Hoefel (unassisted), 24:00. Second half - none.

Shots on goal - NIC 5, GUC 14.

Saves - NIC, Whittni Mundel 4; GUC, Kailey Kiefus 3.
