COEUR d'ALENE - The second-degree murder trial of a 20-year-old Post Falls man scheduled for next month has been moved to next year.

Dylan P. Paschall was scheduled for a 10-day trial starting Oct. 29 for the death of 18-year-old Luke Anana-Kuewa in Spirit Lake in March 2012.

The jury trial in front of 1st District Court Judge Fred Gibler is now scheduled to take place in March 2014, two years after Anana-Kuewa's death.

Paschall, who is in custody, appeared in court Tuesday in front of Gibler.

The judge didn't set a specific date for the trial to start, but asked prosecutors and Paschall's defense lawyers to come to an agreement on one.

Paschall was bound over to District Court following a preliminary hearing in June. He then pleaded not guilty to the charge.

At the preliminary hearing, prosecutors put forward evidence that showed Anana-Kuewa was found dead in 3 feet of water about 9 feet from the shoreline of icy Mill Pond on Spirit Lake.

Prosecutors said Paschall punched Anana-Kuewa multiple times in or near the freezing water.

Paschall and three friends had been drinking rum and smoking pot on the night of March 24, 2012, by a fire pit in a spot known as Bubba's Pit. Anana-Kuewa wandered into the wooded spot later and joined the group for the alcohol and pot.

During the drinking and smoking, according to testimony during the preliminary hearing, Anana-Kuewa began yelling and acting erratically and went into the water.

Paschall is accused of going in after him and striking multiple blows to Anana-Kuewa's face.

Anana-Kuewa's body was found in the water the next morning.

An autopsy determined he drowned, but Anana-Kuewa also had cuts, scrapes, and swelling to his face. Additionally, he had injuries to his neck, hands, wrists and legs.
