The C.R.O.P. Hunger Walk is back. Last year’s walk in Columbia Falls was the second largest in Montana and raised more than $5,400, and support for the local food bank increased for the fourth year in a row.

This year’s five-mile walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, starting at the North Valley Senior Citizens Center on Nucleus Avenue. Walkers can begin signing in at 1 p.m. One and three mile routes will also be held. Teams can be formed at businesses or families.

Hunger Walks were initiated by Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (C.R.O.P.) more than 60 years ago in an effort to feed a starving Europe after World War II. Now five-mile walks are held in honor of women and girls who walk five miles every day to provide fresh water for their families.

Twenty-five percent of the money raised by the event will go to the Columbia Falls Food Bank. The rest will provide seeds, education and water sources to help people in Third World countries attain self-sustained lives in their home communities.
