Within minutes of kickoff at the home opener last Friday against Wapato, the Othello Huskies showed what this year's squad is capable of. The Huskies haven't forgotten their disappointing early exit from last year's playoffs and have their sights set on a return trip to the postseason, and are also determined to go deeper in the state tournament this year. To reach this goal they are going to have to play exceptional on both sides of the ball and that is exactly what the boys in red and white did in their first game in front of their hometown fans.

Alix Garcia connected with Randy Gomez for a 16 yard touchdown to open the game, and team captain Tanner Wagner followed up by running for two touchdowns, and that was only in the first quarter of play. The Huskies wasted no time showing just what their offense could do both on the ground and through the air. The defense added to the scoring frenzy, as Gomez made his presence known on the defensive side of the ball as well by returning a fumble seven yards for another score. Garcia and Gomez kept the high octane Huskies rolling as the two hooked up for a 33 yard pass completion and another touchdown, making the score at half 41-0.

After the break, Othello spread around playing time getting multiple players on the field, while continuing their strong play. Andrew Montemayor and Adrian Garza both threw touchdown passes in the second half, while starting quarterback Alix Garcia got some rest. The Husky defense continued their stingy play as well not allowing Wapato to score, solidifying their first shut out of the young 2013 season.

Standout games were turned in by Tanner Wagner who rushed nine times for 141 yards and two touchdowns, Alix Garcia who threw for 98 yards and three scores, and Randy Gomez who caught three passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another touchdown on defense. The final score was 54-0, improving Othello's season record to 2-0 as they now turn their attention to a week 3 showdown with rival Prosser.

It was just three games ago that Prosser defeated the Huskies 15-14 in the playoffs to end their season and hopes of a state championship. Othello will look to ride the momentum of their big win against Wapato as they go on the road to take on Prosser in one of the most anticipated games of the 2013 campaign.
