SOAP LAKE - The Soap Lake and Ephrata school districts will receive a $500,000 grant to start a tutoring program when school isn't in session. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers will be open weekends, during holiday breaks and summer vacation.

The federally-funded grant was awarded to the Northwest Learning and Achievement Group, which includes Parkway, Grant and Columbia Ridge elementary schools in Ephrata and Soap Lake Elementary and Middle/High School.

Smokiam Alternative School isn't included in the grant, said Soap Lake Superintendent Dan McDonald, but students who attend classes at the high school as well as Smokiam will qualify.

The centers will have tutors to help kids who are falling behind in core subjects like reading and math, according to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Students also have access to counseling, and students' families will be connected with literacy and related education opportunities.

Students will be provided computers, and the program includes art, music and recreation activities.

The local schools were among 10 schools or community groups statewide to receive the grants, according to the OSPI press release. The grants were awarded to schools and community groups in low-income areas.
