Ryan and Jame Davis took their teens, Emily and Sam, to Disneyland for spring break. Their first visit to the world of Disney will be memorable, not for the cartoon characters, thrilling rides or long lines ... just eight hours after arriving in Los Angeles, it was another first for the Davis family when a 5.1 earthquake provided a shake-rattle-roll welcome.

Like to meet some real-life heroes and Naval pioneers? The public is invited to a ceremony to induct local submariners into the Holland Club. Members of the U.S. Submarine Veterans who have earned the designation "qualified in submarines" at least 50 years ago will be honored. The Holland Club is named after John P. Holland, designer of the first United States Navy submarine. The potluck begins at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 143, 1138 E. Poleline Ave. in Post Falls. Contact Ron Silver, commander, USSVI Farragut Base, (509) 926-4754 or subsailortubes@comcast.net for more info.

Post Falls High School football coach Jeff Hinz has been tackling cancer since his diagnosis last fall. The community has rallied to his side and that of his family. On Friday, April 18, there will be a Tackle Cancer event at the Coeur d'Alene Inn to benefit the Hinz family. Featuring auction and raffle items and live music by the Rhythm Dawgs, there's still time if you'd like to donate for the auction. emily62103@hotmail.com or see the Tackle Cancer page on Facebook.

Great fun in store on Friday night with the third annual Cowboy Ball to benefit the North Idaho Fair and Rodeo Foundation and the incomparable Kelly Hughes and his band. Looking forward to emcee duties and the addition of the mechanical bull. Not that I'm likely to take a spin, but it should be great spectating. I love this event for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it celebrates the real cowboys, ranchers and farmers who for generations have contributed so much to our North Idaho way of life. It's sure to sell out, so call today to check if tickets are still available, 765-4969.

On Saturday Sharon Stevenson, Terri McTavish, Sharon Wagner, Kelli Hawkins, John Negaard, Jamie Dallas and Gail Osterson will blow out their birthday candles. On Tuesday Amy Bartoo, Greg Prado, Kevin Kram, Patrick Hughes, Veldon Lee and Shanna Riske celebrate another trip around the sun.
