Troy girls basketball, volleyball teams to be honored at banquet
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
The Troy High volleyball and girls basketball teams from 1991 to '98 will be honored as a Legends team at the 52nd annual North Idaho Sports Banquet, scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Coeur d'Alene Inn.
Bobbi Hazeltine, a member of the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame, coached Troy to eight of its nine volleyball and girls basketball state titles during that era.
Hazeltine, who now coaches at Walla Walla Community College, led the Trojans to state basketball championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 and state volleyball championships in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The year after she left for Walla Walla, the Trojans, under the guidance of Kortnie Mills, again won the state title, making it five in a row for the small north central Idaho school.
Hazeltine's basketball teams compiled an overall record of 117-14 during the seasons in which they won state championships. The Troy volleyball teams were 106-4 during Hazeltine's championship years, including a 27-0 mark in 1996 and an 81-match winning streak against Idaho opponents. Overall, the basketball and volleyball teams that won state titles under Hazeltine were 223-18.
Area high school and college athletes and teams will be honored at the banquet. Also, Mike Cox, Dr. James Lynn, Keith Gilbertson, Ryan Phillips, Merril Hoge and the late Gary "Big Daddy" Rasmussen will be inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. Hoge will also be the featured speaker.
Banquet tickets are available through the Coeur d'Alene Inn.
