RONAN — Lake County hosted the Treasure State’s only track meet of the weekend, kicking off a spring sports season through the rainy conditions.

Many schools weren’t at full strength because athletes didn’t have enough practices in to compete, but Ronan coach Jim Benn said the meet did its job.

“It was good to get that one in,” Benn said. “It’s good to keep the kids motivated because sometimes it gets pretty boring in track practice.”

Ronan got a win from senior Lucas Gerhardt in the shot put and had several other placers.

Another highlight of the season’s first weekend was the debut of Mission’s track program. The Bulldogs are back on their own after ending their longtime co-op with Ronan’s program after last season. Coach Trenna Ferris said the Bulldogs are a work in progress, but she’s optimistic.

“That first couple weeks was more of a trial run for us,” Ferris said. “… I think this [coming] week we’ll get some kids in more events and see where we’re going from there.”

The Bulldogs got the majority of their points from their jumpers. Patrick Eichert placed in the triple jump for the boys and Sydney Castor in the long jump on the girls’ side.

Mission was also short-handed, sending just 12 athletes due to practice restrictions.

Arlee, also short-handed, got solid performances from senior Jessica Knoll, who won the 400-meter dash and also placed in the 800 and the 200.

Coach Russ Baker said Knoll’s 1 minute, 5 second time in the 400 “wasn’t bad for the first meet in the cold and wind, but I think she was hoping for a little better time.”

Baker expects his Warriors and Scarlets to be near full strength today when they head to Missoula for the Dornblaser meet.
