MOSES LAKE - Two Big Bend Community College students were selected for the All-Washington Academic Team. Carson Heschle, of Ephrata, and Jessie Sumerau, of Moses Lake, were among 68 community college students recognized during a reception in Olympia March 27.
Each received a $250 scholarship, sponsored by Key Bank.
The Academic Team recognizes academic achievement and community involvement, said Doug Sly, the college's spokesperson. All-Washington recipients are automatically nominated for the All-USA Community and Junior College Academic Team, Sly said.
Sumerau and Heschle are both in their second year at BBCC, and Running Start students. Running Start allows high school students to attend college classes for college and high school credit.
Sumerau is an astronomy-physics major with a 3.88 grade point average, and Heschle is an astrophysics major with a 4.0 grade point average. Both are officers of the college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter; Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year colleges.
Heschle also tutors her fellow students in chemistry. Sumerau is involved with a number of service clubs in high school.
The academic team program is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the Association of Community and Technical Colleges, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and the Trustees for Community and Technical Colleges.
